A team of researchers studied Viagra, the first of its kind, to see if it could help women with low libido.
They conducted a study in the United States of America, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said, and found the drug did boost women's sexual desire by 36 percent.
Viagra, also known by its generic name sildenafil, was developed by Pfizer and marketed as a drug to treat high blood pressure.
The drug is sold under the brand name Cialis and is taken by millions of women worldwide. It's used to treat female sexual dysfunction, or low sexual desire, which can affect a woman's sex drive and ability to have children.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Company, is also a leader in Viagra's market, and is currently developing the drug in the United States.
The study is the first to examine the effect of Viagra on women's sexual desire.
"We found that women who took Viagra sexual arousal therapy increased their libido more than those who didn't," Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a U. fertility specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told NBC News.
"This study shows that even a small amount of Viagra can have a significant impact on women's sexual desire," Kavaler added. "It should be considered when women are trying to conceive."
Although the drug has not been approved by the FDA, Kavaler said, the findings would "not change the way we're developing treatments for low sexual desire."
In the study, the researchers used a combination of MRI and ultrasound to analyze women's blood flow in the clitoris. They compared these two images and compared them to a woman's blood flow.
"We found that women who took Viagra sexual arousal therapy increased their libido," Kavaler said. "This is the first study to examine the effect of Viagra on women's sexual desire."
Kavaler said the findings were promising because the study showed that women who took Viagra sexual arousal therapy increased their libido more than those who didn't.
"The women in this study were experiencing an increased libido that was not due to low sexual desire or other medical conditions," Kavaler said.
In addition, the researchers also found that women who took Viagra sexual arousal therapy increased their desire by 36 percent.
Kavaler said the women taking Viagra sexual arousal therapy also showed a greater desire for sex.
"This is a study in which we cannot say that Viagra or the Viagra pill have been safe in the study," Kavaler said. "But there are other things we can do to increase women's sexual desire."
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health. The drug is marketed under the brand name Addyi, which is a type of drug known as a stimulant. Unlike Viagra, which is approved by the FDA for the treatment of depression, Addyi is only approved for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction.
Addyi works by stimulating brain chemicals that boost sexual desire.
